LEARNING

Of all the sayings in this world
The one to see you through
Is, Never trouble trouble
Till trouble troubles you.

For every evil under the sun,
There is a remedy or there is none.
If there be one, try and find it;
If there be none, never mind it.

A wise old owl sat in an oak,
The more he heard the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard.
Why aren't we all like that wise old bird?

Penny and penny
Laid up will be many;
Who will not save a penny
Shall never have many.

When land is gone and money spent,
Then learning is most excellant.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy;
All play and no work makes Jack a mere toy.

If wishes were horses
Beggars would ride;
If turnips were watches
I would wear one by my side.

WEATHER

Evening red and morning grey,
Send the traveller on his way;
Evening grey and morning red,
Bring the rain upon his head.

Red sky at night,
Shepherd's delight;
Red sky in the morning,
Shepherd's warning.

Rain before seven,
Fine before eleven.

A sunshiny shower
Won't last half an hour.

Mackerel sky,
Mackerel sky,
Not long wet
And not long dry.

When clouds appear
Like rocks and towers,
The earth's refreshed
By frequent showers.

If bees stay at home,
Rain will soon come;
If they fly away,
Fine will be the day.

When the dew is on the grass,
Rain will never come to pass.

Counsel

The cock doth crow
To let you know
If you be wise
'Tis time to rise;
For early to bed,
And early to rise,
Is the way to be healthy
And wealthy and wise.

He that would thrive
Must rise at five;
He that hath thriven
May lie till seven;
He that will never thrive
May lie till eleven.

Go to bed late,
Stay very small;
Go to bed early,
Grow very tall.

Say well and do well
End with one letter;
Say well is good,
Do well is better.

Good, better, best;
Never rest
Till 'good' be 'better',
And 'better' 'best'

One, two, whatever you do,
Start it well and carry it through.
Try, try, never say die,
Things will come right,
you know, by and by.

Patience is a virtue,
Virtue is a grace;
Both put together
Make a very pretty face.

One thing at a time
And that done well,
Is a very good rule,
As many can tell.

To sleep easy all night,
Let your supper be light,
Or else you'll complain
Of a stomach in pain.

Manners

Of a little take a little,
You're kindly welcome, too;
Of a little leave a little,
'Tis manners so to do.

Speak when you're spoken to,
Come for one call,
Shut the door after you,
Turn to the wall.

Come when you're called,
Do as you're bid,
Shut the door after you,
Never be chid

Wilful waste brings woeful want
And you may live to say,
How I wish I had the crust
That once I threw away.

Hearts, like doors, will open with ease
To very, very, little keys,
And don't forget that two of these
Are 'I thank you' and
'If you please'.

PUNCTUALITY

First in a carriage,
Second in a gig,
Third on a donkey,
And fourth on a pig.

Be always in time,
Too late is a crime.

RIDDLES

Two bodies have I,
Though both joined in one.
The stiller I stand,
The faster I run.

Two brothers we are,
Great burdens we bear,
On which we are bitterly pressed;
The truth is to say,
We are full all the day,
And empty when we go to rest.

Thirty white horses
Upon a red hill,
Now they stamp,
Now they champ,
Now they stand still.

The land was white,
The seed was black;
It will take a good scholar
To riddle me that.

She has no feet or hands,
The longer she stands
The shorter she grows.

As round as an apple,
As deep as a pail:
It never cries out
Till it's caught by the tail.
