Tonle Sap lake is the largest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia. It supports a great biological diversity of wildlife and was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997. The above satellite image shows Tonle Sap lake at its southeastern end, drained by the Tonle Sap river. The Tonle Sap river meets the Mekong river near Phnom Penh and during the monsoon season, the swollen Mekong river will force the Tonle Sap river to reverse its flow. This will result in the area of the lake to increase by about five times.
