SPOT Satellite Images of Fires and Smoke Haze
at Plantations near Pekanbaru, Sumatra

The following sequence of SPOT images shows
how fires are used to clear the
forest for development.
Image on the right is thelocation
map of the area. The size of
the area is about 24km x 18km.

06 October 1998
 

This image shows a forested area located at the north of Pekanbaru, Riau. Rectangular road networks cutting into the forests are visible at both sides of the river. The conversion of the forests into plantations are still at the early stage. Some of the forests have already been cleared, with only the burnt scars left. 


 
 
 
 
 
 
24 April 1999
 

Fires are clearly seen at the southern bank of the river. The forests are burnt to create space for new development. 


 
 
 
 
 
22 July1999
 

With the return of the dry season, clearing work continues in the forests at the northern side of the image. Burnt scars occupy a larger area at the southern bank of the river.


 
 
 
 
 
27 July 1999
 

Clouds start to appear in some parts of the image. Land clearing activities cease in the forests at the upper side of the image but resumes in the plantation at the lower portion of the image.


 
 
 
 
11 August 1999
 

Fires have stopped burning in the forest. The area is left with more burnt scars now. Land clearing is expected to continue when the weather becomes dry again, as many parts of the forest have still not been cleared, yet.
