28 September 1995

Tembesi River flows from the middle of the top edge of the image to the lower left corner. Through the puffs of cumulus clouds, we can see that the large area to the east of the river is covered with healthy vegetation (which shows up in red).

The image shown covers about 20km by 15km.

A large plantation has been developed to the east of the river. The regular rectangular grids are probably irrigation channels. The smoke plumes suggest that land is being cleared by burning.

The burnt area and irrigation channels have extended eastward. The area is now covered by a layer of rather thick haze.
